What La Niña Means for Revelstoke
As we gear up for another winter in British Columbia, all eyes are on the skies. Here at Revelstoke Mountain Resort, we’re increasingly optimistic about the upcoming winter season, and for good reason: recent reports state a 71% chance La Niña will return. Historically, this weather pattern leads to heavier snowfall and the powder-packed slopes Revelstoke is famous for. In fact, a recent Meteorologist report included Revelstoke as one of the ski areas that could receive significant snow this winter.
During a La Niña winter, the jet stream, a fast-moving air current, shifts northward. This shift alters weather patterns, creating a northwest flow that funnels cold, moisture-laden air from the Pacific into British Columbia. As this air moves inland and over the mountains, it cools rapidly, resulting in heavier and more consistent snowfall.
Revelstoke's unique position in the world's only inland temperate rainforest plays a crucial role in the heavy snowfall we experience each season. The moisture trapped in our dense forest makes the area particularly prone to significant snow accumulation. When paired with La Niña, these conditions create the ideal environment for deep, dry powder – AKA, every skier's dream.
Time for a Canadian Comeback, eh!
Last winter left many skiers across Canada disappointed by unseasonably low snowfall and record-breaking warmth. As ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific continue to cool, meteorologists are closely watching whether this will be a weak La Niña or something more significant.
Fret not — historically, even weak La Niña winters have brought colder weather, particularly for Western Canada and Revelstoke. This means we could see ideal powder days and more consistent snowfall throughout key months. With Revelstoke’s high-altitude terrain and world-class slopes, La Niña sets the stage for conditions that can rival or even surpass other top resorts in BC — especially during crucial months like December and January, ideal for holiday skiing and beyond.
For the love of winter — LET IT SNOW!
Stay tuned as we monitor the evolving forecast — but one thing’s for sure: Revelstoke is ready to welcome you back for an unforgettable winter season.
